This viola, presented by David R. Pittman on behalf of the owner, Donald McInnes, was made by Joseph Curtin and Gregg T. Alf in 1992 with the opus number CA9672. It bears the labels:
Curtin & Alf label from 1992
facsimile Gasparo da Salo label from 1580
This viola is made from a bench replica of a 1580 Gasparo da Salò model using a two-piece back cut on the quarter from strongly flamed maple. The curl is of irregular width and descends from the center seam. The scroll and ribs are of the same wood. The two-piece top is of medium and somewhat irregular grain spruce and broadens slightly toward the flanks. The viola is finished with an orange-brown varnish on a golden ground and is antiqued to match the original.
